Condition: Antique, used – heavy natural tarnish and multi-color patina, never polished; untested for magnetic accuracy, sold as a decorative collectible
A genuine antique brass ship’s binnacle compass made by Bergen Nautik of Norway, a known Norwegian maker of marine navigation instruments. The compass card is marked “BERGEN NAUTIK” and “NORWAY.”
The binnacle holds a gimbal-mounted magnetic compass that stayed level as a vessel rolled, with an attached side lamp housing (its hinged door marked “PRESS TO OPEN”) that once held an oil or kerosene lamp to light the compass card at night. The wick and burner mechanism is still inside the lamp compartment.
